Qu Shaobin is a coach who likes to laugh, smiling kindly and naturally. As the coach of the Guangdong Southern Tigers youth team, he is in charge of three teams, covering basketball talents aged 12 to 19.
In the past two years, Qu Shaobin’s name and training method have been popular all over the country, and now the number of online fans exceeds 5 million. In the face of all the sudden, Qu Shaobin did not have a hot head and always insisted on his duty of youth coach. As he himself said: doing youth training is not only a responsibility, but also a mission.
After leading the team to win the national U17 Youth Basketball League championship, the reporter asked him to communicate face to face. Let’s take a look at the story of this sentry.

Hometown of GUI
At the end of June, Haicheng, Liaoning province had a pleasant climate.
In 2023, the final of the top six men’s team in the national U17 Youth Basketball League (CYBL) was held in this city. The participating teams not only include teams from the campus, but also have echelon of professional clubs. In 7 days, teams of different styles played against each other, and the game was really good.
The Hongyuan team of Guangdong Sports School, which was in charge of Qu Shaobin, passed all the way and finally met the Hunan team in the final. 88:59, the originally expected strong dialogue ended in a way without suspense. In 7 games, the Hongyuan team of Guangdong Sports School won all, winning more than 30 points per game.
Interestingly, the total ranking of this competition is comprehensively evaluated according to the scores of the competition (75%), the scores of quality and technical standards (15%), and the scores of technical evaluation (10%). Guangdong Sports School Hongyuan team ranked third in the physical examination, and the technical evaluation was also the third. The competition was the champion, and the team’s comprehensive evaluation finally ranked first.
Yang Yi, the main guard of the team, won the “most valuable player” award, while Qu Shaobin won the “best coach” award.
People familiar with Qu Shaobin all know that he likes to use young players, which is his unique coaching style. He “plays big with small” in many competitions, so the team’s exercise value is higher.
“Everyone played very well on the spot in this game. I am very proud to bring out such a group of players, and everyone’s efforts have been rewarded. At this age, this is a very important champion.” Qu Shaobin said this after the game.
Xu Jicheng, vice chairman of the Chinese Basketball Association, who was in charge of the award, found Qu Shaobin excitedly after the match: “Director Qu, your team is really good. Especially the defender, it is really good.”
In China, basketball youth training is a long road. In addition to teaching children to play basketball, coaches should also be responsible for everyone’s food, clothing, housing and transportation, helping them establish correct three views, which is a very heavy workload.
Qu Shaobin is the leader in this field. As the coach of the Guangdong Southern Tigers youth team, his players range from 12 to 19. In his words, it was really “being a father and a mother”.

The teenager went south
The competition Land of U17, the Sea city, walked more than two hundred kilometers east, is the hometown of Qu Shaobin Dandong Fengcheng.
It was here that he started his own road of basketball. It was also here that he got on the south train and went through 40 hours of turbulence to Guangdong Southern Tigers.
It was July, 1999. Qu Shaobin, who had just arrived at Guangzhou railway station, was driven by the temperature and mosquitoes here, carrying a sweat and a leg bag. He started his career in Hongyuan.
“I remember that I planned to go to Guangdong at that time. My family had a big disagreement about this. My grandparents agreed, but my grandparents firmly disagreed. In the end, when I made my own choice, I also took a sigh of relief and hoped to play a famous role.”
13-year-old teenager Lang from the north to the south, everything needs to start again. Looking back on that journey, Qu Shaobin described it as “life training”, because only in this way can he rush out.
In 2004, Qu Shaobin was officially promoted to the first team in Guangdong Southern Tigers. As a rookie, he personally experienced the battle between Guangdong team and Jiangsu men’s basketball in the finals, of which the fifth was the plot twist that CBA recorded in history. The excitement and excitement of winning the key game is as if it was still yesterday.
In the player era, Qu Shaobin won two CBA championships with Guangdong team. Together with Du Feng, Zhu Fangyu, Wang Shipeng, Zhou Peng and others, he set up Hongyuan banner.
But behind the bright, it is beyond the ordinary people’s efforts. From the youth team to the first team, the injury was always accompanied by Qu Shaobin: both knees had suffered a fracture of the cross ligament, and five operations were performed before and after.
In order to protect aigeneral, Guangdong team sent him to Beijing for surgery, Hong Kong for surgery, anesthesia, injection, treatment and rehabilitation…… It is either physical or psychological, and every step is painful.
Just after a big injury, when the team planned to arrange him to go to the United States for surgery, Qu Shaobin gave up.
“I have had so many operations, most of which are hidden from my parents. They can’t stand the blow. I also feel tired. At that time, I really couldn’t hold on.”
In 2009, Qu Shaobin officially retired. After rejecting several civil servants in the Big Bay area, he chose to enter the coaching group of Hongyuan youth team.
In the 2012-2013 season, Qu Shaobin entered the coaching team of Hongyuan first team, assisting Li Chunjiang.
With Yunus taking charge of the Guangdong team later, Qu Shaobin’s coaching career ushered in a change. With the help of the Egyptians, he worked hard to learn English by himself and began to get in touch with basketball concepts in Europe and America. When he became the coach of the Guangdong Southern Tigers youth team, he also completed his promotion.

Integration of sports and education
Since 2014, Qu Shaobin has been studying in Europe and America for six consecutive years by taking personal leave every year. It is 3 weeks short and 3 months long. As long as he does not delay his team training, he will try his best to learn more excellent experience abroad.
In foreign countries, Qu Shaobin either watched with the team or attended various basketball classes during the day. In the evening, he would also learn online courses of different coaches through computers. Although time was tight, he enjoyed it and had a wide horizon.
“I like this kind of teaching feeling. I admire these lecturers when I listen to each other’s lectures. There are many college teachers abroad. They are not basketball players, but they study basketball every day. I have benefited a lot from learning.”
Last year, a photo of Hongyuan youth team was circulated on the Internet, which was the group photo of the team in Lithuania in 2018. Except for one player who played in Tsinghua University, 12 players, including Xu Jie and du runwang, all played in the CBA league. The coach of the team stood beside him, and he was qu Shaobin.
“In the era of players, I once entered the national youth, the national Olympics and the national second team, but I have not been selected for the national team. This is a great pity. So as a coach, one of my goals is to train defenders for China’s men’s basketball.”
Now, Hu Mingxuan and Xu Jie have become frequent visitors to the national team, and Qu Shaobin’s goal has been achieved.
“I have worked in Hongyuan club for 23 years and have always regarded this club as my family and worked for Hongyuan with gratitude. Similarly, I am obsessed with the position of basketball coach and regard it as a mission rather than just a job and responsibility. Seeing every parent who sent their children is like seeing myself in those days. No matter how tired the process is and how naughty the children are, I must live up to my promise to my parents.”
In recent years, with the rise of domestic campus basketball, basketball matches at various campus levels have gradually increased. Under the background of the integration of sports and education, promotion through campus has become an important choice for basketball players. The diversion of talents has brought unprecedented pressure to the training of traditional sports.
Through many efforts, Hongyuan basketball club has carried out in-depth cooperation with Guangdong Experimental Middle School and signed a joint contract. The two sides have strong advantages and resources. Students can not only receive education in school, you can also enjoy the systematic training of the club.
As the coach of the Guangdong Southern Tigers youth team, Qu Shaobin was also responsible for this team that cooperated with the province. There are many competitions in academic circles. Players can also participate in all kinds of campus basketball competitions across the country while receiving campus education.
The integration of sports and education makes the road of Hongyuan youth training wider and wider. Qu Shaobin hopes that there will be more intercommunication between the academic circle and the sports circle in the future, so that every player can have more opportunities to compete. Only when the base is large can more talents be cultivated.

Online Rage
Every time Qu Shaobin leads the team out to compete, many parents will find opportunities to talk with him, including many grassroots youth coach who like to consult him. Why is he so famous? This starts from 2021.
At that time, the old friend found Qu Shaobin, hoping to shoot some videos of his daily training. Qu Shaobin didn’t think much about it either. It was nothing more than a microphone and two cameras on the field.
Unexpectedly, since “qu Shaobin basketball training” boarded major video platforms, the effect was surprisingly good. The outside world found that his video did not have any affectation, even no modification and special effects, and some were only real dry goods.
From passing, fengshui ball, position selection, defense…… Every detail is knowledge, a grassroots youth coach bit by bit, countless players with basketball dreams are really showing in front of the outside world.
In fact, Qu Shaobin basically didn’t spend much time on his own videos, most of which were presented through staff records and clips.
As long as you are a basketball enthusiast or a related practitioner, watching the videos of Qu’s guidance has a feeling of fondness. Every time you look at one of them, there will be different gains. You can’t help reading it several times to find the right path.
For more than two years, many grassroots coaches across the country have become Qu Shaobin’s iron fans, because the video has inspired them too much. Some coaches even use videos as copies and interpret them carefully frame by frame. Similarly, many excellent seedlings came to Guangdong for trial training by watching videos.
In this way, Qu Shaobin was also a little caught off guard, and some criticism came out. But he was not affected by the negative voice and continued to be himself.
At present, Qu Shaobin has more than 5 million fans on the whole network, but he does not bring any goods.
“I only hope to do some public welfare publicity online and focus on my role of youth coach. The internet is like this. We are prepared to face criticism or doubts and will not care about them.”
In addition, Qu Shaobin also has a series of Sentry basketball courses specially aimed at coaches. Many years of traveling abroad made him keen on sharing and discussing. He is really like a sentry, always looking at the direction of the basketball youth training.
“After so many years of accumulation, I also hope to go to a higher platform to temper myself. In 2018, 2020 and 2022, I had the opportunity to take charge of the National Youth men’s basketball, but I didn’t succeed for various objective reasons. I believe I will have the opportunity in the future for this unfinished wish.”

Conghua Training
In recent days, the sky of Guangzhou Conghua is Blue outside, and the sunshine has stained the floating clouds with Phnom Penh.
In the base on the banks of Liuxi River, a group of basketball teenagers chasing their dreams poured in. They carried their bags and wore sneakers. Here, they will spend unforgettable 7 days of light.
There is a consensus in the field of professional basketball: It takes 6 years to cultivate a high-quality center and 8 years for a forward. But a good defender needs 10 to 12 years.
In Qu Shaobin’s view, the defender is the most comprehensive position on the basketball court. Starting from the defender, it is convenient for the future conversion and is helpful for playing any position. On the other hand, if the child just started to rely on the height advantage to receive internal training, but after the time point to change the guard, it will miss the best time.
In 2015, Qu Shaobin guard basketball special training camp was officially launched. Taking advantage of the gap between winter and summer vacation, he and his team built a dream for children with basketball dreams. Over the years, many players who have walked out here have entered the Hongyuan youth team, and even some have entered the team of universities and national names.
“I hope to share my ideas with the society and the campus. Expand the base to let more people contact and feel how professional team coaches bring defenders. In 9 years, our team has been growing.”
Since the summer of 2021, the special training camp has been stationed in Conghua. During the epidemic, the training here has not stopped. By this year, more and more children came here from all over the country.
“In the past two years, almost 60% of the children in the special training camp came from outside the province, including Heilongjiang, Inner Mongolia, Liaoning, Shaanxi and Hubei. Many parents will also accompany them to fill up the hotels near the base.” The person in charge of the special training camp told the reporter.
In hot summer, children practice in the museum and parents watch it nearby. For the same dream, two generations sweat together. Before the end of a training class, parents waited on the sidelines. As soon as Qu’s guidance came out, everyone rushed in and started the communication mode.
In order to feel Qu Shaobin’s course more intuitively, the reporter changed into equipment and joined this group of children. From basic skills training to attack and defense drills, Qu’s guidance is very detailed and answers to students’ questions.
The partner with the reporter was a 19-year-old freshman from xi’an. The purpose of his coming here was very simple: he hoped to enter the basketball team of the college through special training.
After two hours of training in the afternoon, the sweaty reporter had already been leg cramps. He saw Qu’s guidance coming over, “How does the old defender feel? Is the intensity okay?” “Not bad, children need you, and Chinese basketball also needs you.” The reporter replied.
Then we smiled at each other, and Qu instructor was immediately surrounded by students who wanted to ask questions.
[End]]
Fan Yi, the poet of Yuan Dynasty, had a cloud in Wang’s long building: “Everything in life must be done by itself, and it is rare to take JS steps.”
Although both knees had suffered a fracture of the cross ligament, Qu Shaobin never stopped running.
Like a passing year, the Four Seasons rotate. From wearing basketball shoes to picking up coaching board, from offline to online, his steps became more and more light and determined.
As he himself said, “there are few people taking root in youth training in China, and it will be relatively hard. When I invest in this field, I must force myself to continue to learn and update my ideas. I am obsessed with the position of basketball coach. For me, this is not only a job and responsibility, but also a mission.”
